EMDR

The bottom line. EMDR therapy has proven to be effective in treating trauma and PTSD. It may also be able to help treat other mental conditions like anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. Some people may prefer this treatment to prescription medications, which can have unexpected side effects.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured psychotherapy method that uses guided eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) to help the brain process unresolved memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to go into detail about painful experiences—instead, it helps your brain naturally heal and reframe them.

How EMDR Works

When a traumatic or distressing event occurs, it can become “stuck” in the brain, causing ongoing emotional distress. EMDR helps unlock these memories and allows your brain to process them in a healthier way.

During a session, your therapist will guide you through a series of eye movements or gentle tapping while you briefly focus on a specific memory. Over time, the emotional intensity decreases, and negative beliefs are replaced with more positive, empowering ones.
